Greetings from the Conference Chair of the 49th Annual Meeting of Taiwanese Dermatological Association (TDA)

On behalf of the conference committee of the 49th Annual Meeting of Taiwanese Dermatological Association (TDA2023), I welcome you to join our international conference from Dec 8 to 10, 2023 in Taiwan. The Department of Dermatology at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital is helping us host this conference in tropical Kaohsiung, a city with more than 1.5 million residents.  Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s second largest city and home to its biggest harbor and major maritime industries.

Many people are unaware that 100 years ago, Taiwan was a major region for scientists from the UK, Japan, the USA, and other countries to investigate the clinical features and pathophysiology of the tropical diseases, including parasitic diseases as well as biochemical make of various snake venoms. The skin, our largest organ, acts as a barrier against environmental insults, including ultraviolet irradiation. Situated in the tropics, Kaohsiung has long been the location of hundreds of government-funded studies dedicated to skin diseases related to the warming and sun exposure, emerging infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and the biological interactions of these diseases with barrier function and immune regulations. Today changes occurring in our climate, particularly global warming, are creating new gaps in our knowledge of skin health and diseases and Kaohsiung will no doubt continue to play an important role in studies filling these gaps.

After three years of isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, our association is especially eager to resume our annual meeting and bring together dermatologists, residents, investigators, and students from around the world to facilitate collaborative research efforts in the basic science and evidence-based clinical practice of dermatology, advance our knowledge of disease pathophysiology, and foster talent in medical and aesthetic dermatology. Thus, at this meeting, leading experts in skin diseases and skin health from USA, Japan, Korea, Australia, Europe, and several other countries will share their knowledge of skin biology discuss its translational significance. Clinical lectures by experts within and outside of our communities will be delivered every day, high-quality symposiums will hold to review the latest advances in the management in skin diseases, and a discussion of creative uses of artificial intelligence and telemedicine in dermatology will be initiated. Our venue in Kaohsiung is exceptional and social events have been planned to facilitate reconnecting with past colleagues and meeting new friends and collaborators. An energizing and refreshing affair, for sure!

After the conference sessions, you are invited to spend several days visiting southern Taiwan. You can enjoy Kaohsiung City, visiting its famous night markets and the newly renovated Kaohsiung Harbor as well as learn a little about the diverse and colorful ethnic groups found in Taiwan. Also, be prepared to taste some the freshest and tastiest seafood in the world.

  Welcome to TDA 2023!
