Dr. A. Razzaque Ahmed is the Director of the Center Blistering Diseases and Professor of Dermatology, Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, USA. He graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi, India. He trained in Internal Medicine at U of Pittsburgh, Dermatology at the U of Buffalo, NY and Allergy & Immunology at University of California at Los Angeles(UCLA). He earned a Doctor of Science degree in Molecular Immunology from the Harvard Faculty of Medicine. After six years on Faculty at UCLA, he was on Harvard Faculty for 23 years. Dr. Ahmed is pioneer and global leader in the field of Autoimmune Blistering Disease. His research spans from studying etiopathogenesis to describing new treatments. The first to discover the association of  HLA-DQB1*0402 with Jewish pemphigus patients and HLA-DQB1*0501 with non-Jewish patients, he demonstrated presence of low titers of pemphigus autoantibody in haploidentical relatives. He described IgG4 as the pathogenic and IgG1 as non-pathogenic pemphigus autoantibody. From Northwestern Iran, he sequenced the DQB1*0402 gene in PV patients, and showed it had 100 % homology in Ashkenazi Jewish PV patients in the US and in Israel. This research provided molecular evidence that Ashkenazi Jews may have originated in Kazaristan in Central Asia. He discovered Alpha 6 integrin as the putative antigen in oral pemphigoid and Beta 4 integrin when other sites are involved in Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid. He identified the epitopes on both molecules, and produced disease in mice and  tissues cultures. To bring changes and makes advances in the treatment of autoimmune blistering diseases, Dr. Ahmed established a “ Center for Blistering Diseases.” A comprehensive multi-faceted facility which addressed every need of patients. With specialist in oral medicine, ophthalmology, ENT, gastroenterology, urology, gynecology, proctology, internal medicine, nutrition and clinical psychology, he created a special team. Started in 1997, it is the only such Center in US. In 1993 he began the Boston Blistering Diseases Support Group. Many cities and IPPF have emulated it. Dr. Ahmed designed a unique protocol for using IVIg to treat Autoimmune Blistering diseases, that produced long term clinical remissions. Panel of 38 experts on blistering diseases from the US, Canada and Europe met as a Consensus Development Group and produced a Consensus Statement on the use of IVIg to treat blistering diseases. He pioneered the use of Rituximab in bullous diseases.  Most recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, he described that combination of IVIg & Rituximab produced 15 years diseases free, drug free, remissions. His latest publication entitled “Reversing Autoimmunity” appeared in the July Issue of the “Frontiers in Immunology”. These landmark and milestone contributions brought him the“ Doctor of The Year” Award, by the International Pemphigus and Pemphigoid Foundation, and the Walter Level Award, given once in 25 years. He has received Life Time Achievement and Excellence Award from seven countries in four continents. His scholarship, persistent commitment, and continued dedication has left an impact of dermatology worldwide.
